Smart Money Management for Non-Accountants

Are you the founder, executive director, or working board member of a new or established community development corporation or neighborhood-based group with little or no background in accounting or financial management concepts? Whether your organization is starting a housing or commercial development project, delivering social services, or receiving predevelopment project funds, you need to understand the fundamentals of nonprofit organization bookkeeping and become "accounting literate". This institute will help you read, analyze, and communicate financial information to staff, board, bookkeepers, and accountants as well as help develop organizational financial systems.

Wayne Brown, former Executive Director of Neighborhood House, Inc., with 25 years of organizational management experience and financial packaging expertise in nonprofit community economic development, will help you:

• Learn the financial policies and procedures used to establish financial systems in nonprofits
• Understand the fundamentals of accounting technology (debits and credits, double entry bookkeeping, etc.)
• Become familiar with basic financial statements (cash flow, profit and loss, balance sheets, income statements)
• Learn how disbursements and contributions lead to the preparation of financial statements
• Learn what financial information says, means, and implies, and how to use that information to analyze organizational health and vitality
