Nonprofit Management Certificate Course:
Course Curriculum

Module 1: Strategic Planning/Management (2 Days)

    This module focuses on the basic theories and functions of strategic planning and management, and introduces students to the planning/ monitoring/ evaluation cycle. Financial aspects of strategic planning and management are emphasized.

Module 2: Financial Reporting and Analysis (2 Days)

    This module emphasizes the communication and interpretation of financial information for decision-making by managers, governing boards, granting agencies and donors. Techniques and principles of cash flow prediction, resource allocation, financial statement analysis, and budgeting and control are presented.

Module 3: Technology as a Management Tool (1 Day)

    This module focuses on three aspects of leadership: developing and working within a multi-cultural management team, understanding management styles, and conflict resolution.

Module 4: Leadership in Nonprofit Organizations (2 Days)

    This module provides a basic introduction to the use and benefits of technology as a tool for information access, management, and dissemination. Topics include electronic bulletin boards, using online search engines, and other Internet resources.

Module 5: Advocacy and Political Action ( 1 Day)

    This module emphasizes strategies managers can pursue to become more effective advocates in public arenas. Topics include methods for communicating effectively with public policy makers, issues of how and when to attempt to influence legislative action, techniques for mobilizing grass-roots support and securing media attention, and the legal restrictions placed upon nonprofit lobbying efforts.

Module 6: Human Resources Management (3 Days)

    This module trains managers in selected aspects of personnel management, including interviewing and selection, employment law, board governance and volunteer management, career development, and performance assessment.

Module 7: Program Evaluation (1 Days)

    This module presents basic concepts and models for determining how efficiently and effectively the organization is performing. Strategies for incorporating the results of evaluation into program planning, program implementation, and justifying resource requirements are covered.

Module 8: Marketing and Fund Raising (2 Days)

    This module emphasizes marketing, public relations and fund raising. Approaches to developing systematic marketing and fund raising strategies are presented. Sources of nonprofit revenue, historical philanthropic patterns, and strategies to achieve a stable and diversified funding base are reviewed.
