ADVANCED NONPROFIT MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATE COURSE

Marketing and Public Relations for Nonprofits

This five-session course is designed to provide the specific knowledge, skills, resources and tools needed to effectively market nonprofit agencies and their programs and services.

The course is targeted to those who need to understand and/or apply diverse, cost-effective marketing programs that will attract financial support, volunteers and clients, helping the agency not only survive, but thrive.

We will go beyond the goal of commercial gain by exploring issues related to marketing challenges and social change efforts.

The class is highly interactive and provides a forum to apply what is learned to the real world.

Trainers

Course Trainers and the Panel of Presenters are seasoned professionals in their respective fields and (in alphabetical order) include:

  • Claire Brechter - Public Relations Consultant
    Claire has nearly 25 years of public relations and communications experience in developing, implementing and managing public relations programs for a broad spectrum of businesses and services. In 1991, after ten years in NYC working with major international agencies like J. Walter Thompson, Blumenfeld and Associates and Ketchum Public Relations where she served as vice president, Claire launched her own consultancy and has serviced clients ranging from Fortune 500 companies to small businesses and nonprofit organizations.

  • Warren Chase - Vice President, Digital Eye
    Warren Chase has worked with Digital Eye, a web site design company located in Wilmington for five years. He specializes in site design, including graphic art creation, HTML programming, JavaScript programming, and Flash animation. He has been instrumental in developing sites for clients in the financial, nonprofit, and consumer products industries. He also teaches Web Fundamentals at the Delaware College of Art and Design.

  • Dick Evans - Public Affairs Consultant
    Dick’s experience includes a broad range of public relations positions in the political, private enterprise, and public arenas. On loan from ATT, he served as a field operations director for Pete duPont for Congress and served as his Chief of Staff in Washington before returning to the private sector as Delmarva Power’s vice president for public relations. He was executive director for Wilmington Renaissance Corp (formerly Wilmington 2000), and for the past four years he has provided crisis communications, strategic planning, marketing and public relations to clients like CalTex Pacific region, the Wilmington Police Department and the Wilmington Library. He has served on the DANA board for six years.

  • Glenda Green - Marketing Research Consultant
    Glenda, formerly a research manager with the DuPont Company, has expertise in researching consumer behavior as it relates to marketing . She co-developed and taught Strategic Market Planning, Branding and Positioning Courses. Glenda is an active member of the Marketing Sciences Institute where she presented papers and served as a member of the Branding Committee.

  • Jeff Hughes - President, Hughes Design
    Jeff founded Hughes Design in 1989 to provide effective creative solutions to the marketing and communication needs of corporations, small businesses and nonprofit agencies. Jeff’s won numerous awards during his careers, and his creative expertise has helped companies like AIG, DuPont, and First USA market more effectively. Jeff has also created successful solicitation campaigns for agencies like the Food Bank of Delaware, Newark Day Nursery and Planned Parenthood of Delaware.

  • Lonni Lehman - President, Lehman Design
    Lonni’s award-winning graphic design career spans more than 17 years, beginning with freelance work for various local design agencies. In 1987 she helped found a Wilmington-based design house where she served as creative director and account executive. Almost a decade ago, she founded Lehman Design, specializing in innovative design solutions for clients in health care public education, industry and social services.

  • Sonia Rice - President, Breakthrough Communications
    Sonia’s extensive background in agency-side marketing communications includes experience in account supervision, production management and media planning and placement. Before founding Breakthrough in 1989, she worked with two of the country's premier media buying companies, supervising and negotiating media placements nationwide. Under her management, Breakthrough provides strategic marketing programs for educational, healthcare and other not-for-profit organization, winning many awards over the years for marketing programs and pieces that meet or exceed client objectives.

  • Sima Robbins - Marketing Communications Consultant and Advanced Course Coordinator
    Sima has nearly 25 years in marketing and communications, and her experience includes both client and agency side positions. She has managed business-to-business and consumer accounts, providing communications planning and execution in the profit and not-for-profit sectors. She specializes in issues management, speech writing, copy writing for all media, marketing planning and implementation.

  • Rob Szczerba - Vice President of Sales, Associates Graphic Services
    In 1988, Rob started his printing career as an account manager for AGS. Six years later, Eastman Kodak recruited him, and he served as account manager for major clients of the imaging services division. When Rob was promoted to site operations manager, he oversaw day-to-day operations for the company’s single largest operations center globally. When the imaging services business was sold, AGS sought his return to capitalize on his many years of in-depth printing knowledge and understanding of client imaging needs in both the profit and nonprofit arenas.

The Course Curriculum:

Day 1 Get ready to market - Find out about contemporary social marketing and marketing research approaches/issues.
Day 2 Plan to succeed - Build a marketing communications plan that really works.
Day 3 Execute creatively - Learn how graphic professionals help you capitalize on print and electronic media advertising, promotion, and publicity.
Day 4 Build on Opportunities - Discover the in’s and out’s of how PR can help Agencies grow…and enjoy panel presentations and q/a session from pro’s who’ve “been there, done that” and will tap into some new ideas for your marketing efforts.
NO CLASS Complete your final marketing assignments.
Day 5 Put Theory into Practice - Deliver your course presentation to earn your certificate and graduate.

Pre-requisite:

5 years nonprofit management experience or graduate of the Nonprofit Management Certificate Course.
