LEO TWIGGS
LEO TWIGGS (b. 1934), born in St. Stephen, South Carolina, graduated summa cum laude from Claflin University, South Carolina. He later studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA at New York University, where he worked with Hale Woodruff. In 1964 Twiggs accepted a position in the art department at South Carolina State University, and in 1970, became the first African American to receive a doctorate in art education from the University of Georgia.
