ERNEST CRICHLOW

ERNEST CRICHLOW (1914-2005) was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, where he attended the School of Commercial Illustration and Advertising. Augusta Savage and her Harlem Uptown Art Laboratory influenced Crichlow to move away from the commercial arts, and he studied painting and printmaking at New York University and the Art Students League. During the depression, Mr. Crichlow worked with the Works Progress Administration where he developed his narrative, social-realist style of imagery. This experience also fostered his life-long commitment to political activism. Crichlow co-founded the Cinque Gallery, New York, with Norman Lewis and Romare Bearden.
