ELLEN BANKS

ELLEN BANKS (b. 1941), a Boston and Brooklyn-based artist, became known for her pop art inspired paintings but now produces paintings and prints inspired by music. She uses the written scores as a departure point for each abstract composition. Banks' paintings began as note-for-note translations of music, but over time have become less based on mathematical formula and more abstracted in representation of compositions. Her work is in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
