H. KOFI BAILEY

H. KOFI BAILEY (1931-1981) was born in Chicago, grew up in Los Angeles, and received a BA from Alabama State University. He later attended Howard University, Washington DC, where he studied with Alain Locke, Sterling Brown, and James Porter. Deeply involved in the Pan-Africa movement, Bailey became closely associated with-and influenced by-W.E.B. Du Bois and Martin Luther King Jr. African and American experiences permeate his Conte and charcoal drawings, along with an emphasis on social activism and political awareness.
