HALE
WOODRUFF
Hale Woodruff (1900 -1980) was a renowned artist and educator. While never earning a formal degree, he studied extensively in Chicago, Boston, Paris, and Mexico, where he worked with with Diego Rivera. Woodruff began his teaching career in 1931, developing a reputation that attracted students and brought national recognition to the Atlanta University Center. To broaden public awareness of his students and other African American artists, he started the Atlanta University Annual Exhibition of Paintings, Sculpture and Prints by Negro Artists, a national juried competition that provided recognition for emerging artists. Woodruff went on to teach at New York University, retiring in 1967.
