Two-color etchings with aquatint, designed to illustrate Richard Wright's novella Down by the River (1938). All prints are individually numbered and signed by Wilson. The portfolio contains an extra etching that was not used in the book and therefore constitutes a complete record of the artist's work on this project. Six signed and numbered etchings, printed on Arches paper, contained in blue cloth-covered folding portfolio box, lettered in black.

John Wilson (b. 1922) studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and was instrumental in the establishing the Museum of the National Center of Afro-American Artists.

His sculptural approach with solidly modeled, slightly abstracted figures reflect Wilson's training with Fernand Léger in post-war Paris. The impact of Wilson's experience while studying in Mexico during the 1950s is clearly evident, in the use of narrative imagery influenced by social realists of the Diego Rivera school.

Wilson works both as a printmaker and sculptor, and has taught at Boston University for more than 20 years. He was commissioned in 1986 to sculpt a bust of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for the United States Capitol Building.
