Leo Twiggs (1934 -), born in St. Stephen, South Carolina, graduated summa cum laude from Claflin University in 1956, which offered the first art program in the state that was available to African-American students. He taught high school art in Sumter and later studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and New York University, where he worked with the acclaimed African-American painter and muralist Hale Woodruff while earning his master's. At the time there were no institutions in South Carolina that allowed black students into their graduate or post-graduate programs, although by 1964, he was offered and accepted a position at South Carolina State University where he chaired the art department until 1988. In 1970 he became the first African American to receive a doctorate in art education from the University of Georgia.
