Howardena Pindell has worked as a curator at the Museum of Modern Art, and is currently a professor of art at the State University of New York at StonyBrook.

Ms. Pindell uses a wide variety of approaches and media in her work. She has explored performance art, video art, and traditional painting and printmaking. This piece is an example of her exploration of process art from the early 1970's. Process art emphasizes the 'process', or the act of making art, in an attempt to get at the basics of both art and the human condition, an exploration that resurfaces in her later performance pieces.
