Ming Smith Murray grew up in Columbus, Ohio and studied at Howard University. She is best known for developing a personal relationship with her subjects, creating a sense of intimacy that recurs in many of her portraits of musicians, dancers, and writers. Catching the artist in both casual domestic scenes and on stage, these improvisational images draw on Smith Murray's ability to evoke intimacy and memory. Her work is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian, the Schomberg Center for Research in Black Culture and History in New York, and the AT&T Foundation.
