Doughba Caranda-Martin emigrated to the United States from Liberia, where he witnessed the carnage of the Liberian civil wars as a teenager. Escaping to the United States in 1989, he began his careeer in art with formal training at the School of Visual Arts in New York. His work addresses global themes through the fillter of what it means to be African in America. He has had major exhibitions at The Venice Biennale and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and opened Gale-Martin Fine Arts in New York. He is working on orgainzing a communituy arts center in Harlem.

Caranda-Martin is also the founder and CEO of Project Momentum, whose mission is to advance "... knowledge and preservation of African cultures through the promotion of African contemporary arts and the support of African-based charitable organizations in the fight against HIV/AIDS."
