BROWSE THE COLLECTION

Romare Bearden (1911 - 1988) spent his youth in New York, growing up with the Harlem Renaissance unfolding around him. Studying in Paris and New York, he became one of America’s premiere artists of the mid- 20th century. Combining painting and drawing with scraps of paper and cloth, he produced a uniquely American take on the collage. With jazz as much an influence as Picasso and Braque, Bearden explored themes and stories from his early rural childhood as well as contemporary urban life.
