JIM ALEXANDER (1934 - ), a prolific documentary photographer, has chronicled the full spectrum of African American experience, from art, entertainment, and politics to everyday life in his neighborhood. Among his images of musicians is the extensive photoessay on Duke Ellington, highlighted in the publication Duke and Other Legends: Jazz Photographs. In 1968 he travelled the country recording the lives and emotions of African Americans immediately after the assassination of Martin Luther King. Alexander has done outreach work as coordinator and instructor of a photography and journalism program As Seen By Teens at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center. He continues to teach at Clark Atlanta University in addition to exhibiting, curating, and lecturing.
