The Mathematics, Science & Technology Education Connection (MaST Education Connection) is a project initiated by WHYY (Wilmington,
Delaware's Public Broadcasting Station) in collaboration with the University of Delaware's Mathematics & Science Education Resource
Center (MSERC). A major component of the project focused on enhancing middle school mathematics and science teaching and
learning through the use of technology. The development and field testing of student and teacher materials was supported by a U.S.
Department of Education Technology Challenge Grant.
Seven 5th and 6th grade mathematics and science teachers collaborated with MSERC staff to develop and implement activities for students
that focused
on
key concepts in mathematics, applied the concepts in science contexts, and required the use of computer technology. Students learned how
to use the Internet to access data on topics relevant to their interests. They created spreadsheets with tables and
graphs in order to look for patterns and make and test conjectures.
A total of 8 Activities with accompanying Teacher's Notes and Student Assessments were developed:
Frozen Yogurt Preferences
All in a Row?
Bursting Bubbles
Mid-Year Project
|
What are the Chances?
Scatterplots
Spreadsheets and Formulas
End-of-Year Project |
Additional features include: an Activity Summary Matrix that describes the specific mathematics, science and technology content
in each Activity; a cumulative End-of-Year Assessment; and four general scoring rubrics that apply across all assessments.
