Our Mission

The Delaware Mathematics Coalition is an alliance of Delaware leaders representing education, government, business, and the community dedicated to support efforts to improve the mathematical literacy of the citizens of the State of Delaware.

Our Goals

Increase public understanding of the importance of ensuring that Delaware students achieve national and state standards.

Stimulate support for and effective replication of successful programs in Delaware schools and institutions of higher education -- including those that already effectively integrate
mathematics with other subjects.

Encourage appropriate constituencies to develop new initiatives as needed to improve the quality of mathematics education.

Education Reform

In June 1995, the Delaware State Board of Education adopted new mathematics content and performance standards. Delaware's nineteen public school districts, with a student population of approximately 110,000, are charged with writing district level mathematics curricula consistent with these standards and have begun the process of implementing standard-based reform at the classroom level. An interim statewide testing program in mathematics took place in 1993, 1994, and 1995. The new Delaware State Testing Program will pilot mathematics items in spring 1997 and will become operational in spring 1998, testing students in mathematics in grades 3, 5, 8, and 10.
