Master Players Concert Series

Dear Friends,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the UD Master Players Concert Series’ 13–14 season.

I have some exciting news to share about our upcoming season: 1. After 9 successful seasons, MPCS will look to expand our presentation, education and creation by offering more world-class concerts and special educational programs to the communities of the tri-state area; 2. MPCS’s advisory council will be established to contribute to the vision of our beloved series. The inspiring community leaders serving on the council, who have a passion for music and for our community, will be introduced to the public this fall.

This season, MPCS features performances by many
of today’s leading artists and ensembles that will be
invaluable additions to the cultural life of Delaware.
Our popular concerts Mozart Celebration and the
Great Musical Families Recital bring soulful virtuosi with
international reputations to the stage in Delaware.
In addition, MPCS is proud to inaugurate two new
events that are sure to bring the house down: the
Gold Medalist’s Show on Valentine’s Day that will allow the audience to enjoy romantic solo piano repertoire performed by the sensational piano soloist Haochen Zhang, who was the gold medalist of the 2009 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition; and The Art of String Quartet featuring the fiery debut of the acclaimed Aeolus String Quartet, which will showcase some of the most beloved chamber music ever composed for string instruments.

MPCS is known for its creative and unconventional presentations, especially showcased in the annual family concert iMusic, which premiered in 2005. Our season finale iMusic 7—Decoding Music is a conceptual concert that will take you on a journey to a future concert experience by using cutting-edge visual and audio technology. The concert features many original compositions inspired by the research on music and its connection with the human brain. The production will be created by many world famous musicians, scientists and scholars. For the first time, music therapy will play a role in this public event.

While the tri-state area is becoming a more and more attractive place to study, work, live and raise families, MPCS proudly plays a vital role in enriching your cultural opportunities. Like the oxygen you breathe in the air, entertaining, educational and affordable music presentations will always be accessible to everyone through MPCS. My staff, our extraordinary guest artists and I look forward to seeing you in the audience this season!

Xiang Gao, Producing Artistic Director

What a milestone we’re celebrating in 2013–14: the 10th season of the University of Delaware’s Master Players Concert Series! For a decade, MPCS Artistic Director Xiang Gao has believed that the world’s best music could be made—and enjoyed—right here in Newark, Delaware. And for a decade, it has been.

This anniversary provides a wonderful opportunity to remind ourselves how fortunate we are to have front- row seats to virtuoso performances of well-loved masterpieces; to exciting, interactive concerts that engage a “symphony” of senses; and to the breathtaking beauty of music realized by artists who absolutely love what they do. That we have such ready access to this artistry— without benefit of a big city—is just incredible. And I know that this access is ours because the best musicians want to work with Xiang and with UD’s extraordinary faculty. Talent attracts talent, and what a magnet this University has been!

Beautiful music—played well and with passion—has
the unique power to stir, to uplift, to affect and inspire us, as individuals and as a community. If that’s what you expect from the Master Players Concert Series, this special anniversary season will not disappoint. And so
on behalf of the entire University of Delaware—and, most especially, Xiang Gao and the University’s acclaimed music faculty; this season’s featured artists; and all those responsible for producing such a compelling series—I invite you to join me for a musical experience like no other.
