Clinical
Practicum Evaluation
revised
January 20, 2009 |
The student's performance will be evaluated
on a combination of daily professional performance, quizzes, tests, projects, and practical examination. For each
20 day rotation, an affective performance evaluation will be conducted
at mid-rotation and at the completion of the rotation to guide the student
in developing his/her professional growth. Only the final evaluation will
be used in determining the student's clinical practicum grade. See http://www.udel.edu/medtech/student_policy.html
for additional details.
Each student is required to maintain a journal
for each clinical practicum period.
Journals are one of the most frequently prescribed methods of reflecting on lifetime
experiences. You may record the sequence of daily events, as well as unusual or
memorable situations or events that transpired and how you reacted to them. What
happened? How did you react? How would you react the next time you encounter a
similar situation? Or perhaps provide a commentary about a particular laboratory
employee or environment that you encounter. Think about how your day impacted
you professionally. Write regularly and record the date and time of each entry.
A minimum of three entries per week are required. At least once during each rotation reflect and write about the topics listed below. Record your journal
using a word processing package and transmit the entire journal via e-mail to
the education coordinator by the deadline listed in the table below. Please name
your journal file with your last name plus the number of the clinical rotation
period, e.g. ALLSHOUSE1, ALLSHOUSE2, etc.

Comprehensive Examination |
Each student is required to pass the
department's comprehensive examination to be certified as having successfully
completed an approved course of study in Medical Technology, thus becoming
eligible for a national certifying examination. Failure in this examination
will not preclude the student graduating from the University. However,
it will prevent the student from being authorized by the Chairperson of
the Department to be eligible for national certifying examinations.
- Structure: The Comprehensive (Comp)
Exam is a criterion reference exam. Each Medical Technology faculty member
has contributed a number of questions from their discipline as follows:
- Chemistry (50)
- Hematology (40)
- Immunohematology (40)
- Microbiology (40)
- Molecular Diagnostics (15)
- Immunology/Serology (20)
- Information Technology, Communication

at a later time. The student may take as long as necessary to answer
individual questions but the entire exam must be completed within four hours.

or technical difficulty is encountered during the examination period, the
exam will be distributed on paper and student responses will be recorded on
scan sheets.
- Criterion for passing the examination
is defined as obtaining a minimum score of 65% (unless otherwise stated) in each discipline section. See examples below:
- Chemistry: minimum of 33 correct of 50 questions for passing score of 66%,
- Molecular Diagnostics: minimum of 10 correct of 15 questions for passing score of 67%,
- Information Technology, Communication Skills, Leadership: minimum of 10 correct of 15 questions for passing score of 67%.
