MEDT 461/471 Laboratory Practice and Leadership

Course Goals

The purpose of these courses is to introduce the student to clinical laboratory practice and leadership with emphasis placed on management styles, motivational techniques, communication skills, organizational leadership, and administration of personnel. The clinical laboratory scientist (CLS) must have a better understanding of management as well as the various theories and tenets of leadership in order to be effective performers in the clinical setting. The CLS should be able to participate in the development of and be responsible for technical and administrative procedures. The CLS should also be able to offer their employer more than basic technical skills in this current down-sizing and budget-reduced climate. The CLS will be expected to offer a wide variety of leadership skills even if they are not in a management position. These courses will provide information to form a foundation on which to build the leadership skills needed to become an active participant in the operations of the laboratory.

The methods of presentations may include lectures, discussions, small group presentations, overhead projections, simulations, case studies, and videotapes.
