MEDT 420/421 Immunohematology II

Course Goals

Immunohematology II will build on the basic concepts of blood group serology and compatibility testing learned in Immunohematology I.  The student will be introduced to more advanced techniques for complex serological problem solving such as antibody neutralization, enzyme treatment of reagent cells, prewarmed technique, saline replacement, autoabsorption and elution techniques.  Students will also gain experience using advanced technology including solid phase red cell adherence and gel technology.  Autoantibodies and autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) will be covered including cold-reactive, warm-reactive and drug-induced.  Polyagglutinable red blood cells and their corresponding polyagglutinins will be addressed.

Transfusion therapy and its related risks, including transfusion reactions, and transfusion transmitted diseases will be studied.  Hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN) including prenatal and postpartum testing, fetal and neonatal evaluation, intrauterine and exchange transfusions and the use of RhoGAM (RhIG) in the prevention of maternal immune anti-D formation will be studied.  The topic of component therapy including preparation, expiration, processing, shipping, storage, issuing and transfusion will be discussed.
