MEDT 403 Clinical Physiological Chemistry II

Course Goals

Clinical Physiological Chemistry is the study of chemical principles, analytical methods, and physiological processes and their relationship to the understanding, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease.  Clinical chemistry as a discipline brings the principles of chemistry, physiology, physics, electronics, mathematics, and statistics together to play active roles in its understanding and application.  The background provided by these core courses becomes the groundwork upon which clinical chemistry will be built.  The student is advised to review pertinent areas of physiology and biochemistry when necessary in order to better comprehend the concepts of clinical chemistry.

Clinical chemistry is a diverse subject that deals with the quantification of various analytes in body fluids, the instrumentation needed to make these determinations, and the quality assessment necessary to maintain the validity of test results.  The goal of this course is to facilitate the student's ability both to understand the principles of clinical chemistry methodologies and the theory of instrumentation and to apply this knowledge to the interpretation of test data in health and disease.  This course is designed to build on the basic concepts developed in MEDT 375, 401/411.  The student will learn about such topics as the principles of operation of chemistry analyzers, enzyme analyses, hormone analyses, toxicology and therapeutic drug monitoring.  The laboratory activities in MEDT 413 are designed to complement the lecture series so that as complete a picture as possible will be presented to the student.
