MEDT 375 Clinical Laboratory Techniques and Statistics

Course Goals

This course provides practical case study scenarios for student development of skills needed to perform basic clinical chemistry procedures: making reagent solutions and using those solutions in spectrophotometric analyses, and evaluating the quality assurance of those analyses by statistical means. A significant portion of this class is devoted to introductory statistics (e.g. descriptive statistics, probabilities, t tests, sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, correlation, and regression), with an emphasis on how statistics are used in clinical laboratory science. Students will also use the clinical laboratory statistics program EP Evaluator (David G. Rhoads Associates, Inc.). During this course students will gain skills in using and understanding statistics. This course also introduces laboratory information systems and the role of research in the clinical laboratory.
