MEDT 210 Information Technologies & Communication Skills

Course Goals

Information Technologies & Communications Skills focuses on the use of technology including PowerPoint, Word, Excel, World Wide Web browsers, and e-mail to achieve effective communication necessary for success in the biomedical sciences. Numerous aspects of computer technology (including computer hardware), web site development, educational principles, and presentation skills are discussed. Students will also learn how to find useful information and references on the Internet. There is ample computer laboratory time for students to have hands-on access to the software applications previously mentioned. Goals of this course include understanding computer terminology and using computers and computer software to increase productivity.

As a practicing professional, the clinical laboratory scientist is frequently responsible for the instruction of others. Development of training programs, orienting new employees, or educating the public on the latest laboratory advancements are just a few examples. Within the framework of this course, students will have an opportunity to prepare and present a basic instructional unit. Students will be expected to retain these skills for use in future MEDT courses.

Practice files

These files are needed for the laboratory section of MEDT210. Student enrolled in MEDT210 should download the practice files and bring them to the computer laboratory. Right click on the practice file link and save the file on your computer. The file is a self-extracting zip file; double-click on the file after downloading it. The files will be saved in a folder called Practice files. Copy the two folders (Excel and Word) to a flash memory stick and bring it to the laboratory sessions.
