MEDT 100 Introduction to Medical Technology
Course Goals
Introduction to Medical Technology is designed to give the student
an overview of the profession of medical technology and an appreciation
of how the medical technologist contributes, as a member of the allied
health team, to quality patient care. Some of the topics that will
be explored in this course include: MT educational requirements,
certification, the role of accrediting agencies, responsibilities of the
medical technologist and how they relate to other health professions and
the patient, employment opportunities, and professionalism.
Course Organization
Introduction to Medical Technology is organized into eight units with each unit subdivided into Objectives and Activity/Assignment sections. The OBJECTIVES section outlines those items which need to be thoroughly understood by the student. It is the student's responsibility to complete all items listed in the objectives, since time limitations may not permit the covering of all items in class. Quizzes will be based on the stated objectives. The ACTIVITY/ASSIGNMENT section is designed to help the student to become more familiar with the use of e-mail and to locate information on the Internet that complements the lecture material. In addition, the student is required to attend one field trip to a hospital laboratory. This activity will help the student to better understand the nature of clinical laboratory work.
Community service projects have been incorporated into the course. Each student is required to participate in one community service project. As a health professional, it is important for each of us to think more broadly about the needs of others. While we tend to focus on health through laboratory services, we must remember the overall needs of individuals are far more complex, involving their body, mind and spirit.
Required reading materials for the course include: journal articles that will be distributed in class and Internet readings.
