This patient would have an increase in conjugated bilirubin
in their blood. Remember, this patient has post-hepatic jaundice
due to gallstones, therefore, there is nothing to impede the unconjugated
bilirubin from getting into the liver. Also, the liver is fine, so
there should be no problems with the conversion of unconjugated bilirubin
into conjugated bilirubin. With the bile duct obstruction, the problem
lies in getting the conjugated bilirubin into the small intestines.
Due to the blockage, the conjugated bilirubin leaves the liver and goes
out into the general circulation accounting for the increase of conjugated
bilirubin in the blood.
