Jaundice, a yellow discoloration of the skin, mucous membranes, and sclera, is due to the presence of high levels of bilirubin in the blood. High levels of bilirubin present may be attributed to inflammation of the liver, abnormal liver cells, and blockage of the bile ducts. Jaundice in newborns is often caused by the breakdown of a large number of red blood cells.
