Answers:
Question # 1: Is there a discrepancy between the Blood stix test
and the microscopic results? If so, what could account for this?
Answer: Yes there is a
discrepancy between the Blood stix result (Large) and the Microscopic
result (0-2/hpf.) This discrepancy is most likely caused by a high
level of myoglobin, released from dying muscle as a result of the crush
injury. Note, both Myoglobin and RBC's contain hemoglobin, and will
thus react with the Blood stix test. However, only RBC's will be
visible in the microscopic examination.
