In coronary artery disease, plaque, made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood, builds up inside the coronary arteries. These arteries supply the heart muscle with oxygen-rich blood. Plaque narrows the arteries and reduces blood flow to the heart muscle. This greatly damages the kidneys and may lead to renal disease.
