The plasma bilirubin level is significantly higher than the normal value in posthepatic jaundice. Normally, the majority of the conjugated bilirubin formed is collected in the bile duct and released into the small intestine. Since it is unable to follow this pathway, the conjugated bilirubin is forced to enter the systemic circulation. It is detectable in the patient's blood sample even before it is detected in the urine.
