EXPLANATION:
Red blood cells, whether intact or
lysed, produce a positive result on the chemical test. However, if the
red blood cells have lysed (due to a hypotonic or alkaline environment),
they would not be seen microscopically. The erythrocytes swell and release
their hemoglobin to become ghost cells. These colorless, empty circles
are extremely difficult and usually impossible to see under brightfield
microscopy.
