PURPOSE: This course describes the formation and physiological
role of urine, synovial, cerebrospinal, seminal, serous and amniotic fluids,
as well as characteristic changes in these fluids in certain clinical conditions.
The principles and clinical significance of testing performed in the routine
physical, chemical and microscopic analysis of urine are emphasized. Laboratory
assignments will provide practical experience in the performance, quality
assurance and clinical correlation of urinalysis and selected body fluid
procedures.
COMPETENCIES: The student will achieve:
-
An understanding of the function which urinalysis plays in the diagnosis
and treatment of various clinical conditions.
-
A thorough knowledge of the theory which underlies the performance
of the clinical assays experienced during student laboratory.
-
The dexterity and confidence to perform urinalysis procedures that
attain acceptable reproducibility.
-
The ability to explain consequences or effects implied in laboratory
data.
-
The ability to evaluate the acceptability of urinalysis procedures,
laboratory data, and the clinical significance of test results.
-
An appreciation of the need for quality assurance/quality control programs
in the urinalysis laboratory, and information required to initiate/maintain
such programs.
-
The ability to contribute to the orderly operation of a clinical
laboratory through demonstration of cooperative attitude, good laboratory
