Answer 1

Correlations:

  • The moderate blood on the Multistix pad correlates with the red blood cells (20-50/hpf) seen under the microscope.
  • If there are cellular elements in the blood, the appearance should be smoky or cloudy.

Discrepancies:

  •  There are discrepancies in the color/appearance and the color/specific gravity of the urine.
  • Straw-colored urine samples are very dilute and their appearance is often clear, not cloudy.
  • If there are a moderate amount of red blood cells present in the urine, the urine should be a darker yellow or a slightly pink/red color.
  • Also, the specific gravity of the urine and the color do not correlate. Normally straw-colored urine samples have a hypotonic specific gravity <1.010. The patient in this case has a specific gravity of 1.020.
