Edema is the accumulation of excess fluid in the tissues.  The severe proteinuria that occurs with nephrotic syndrome leads to hypoproteinemia.  As the blood protein decreases, the intravascular oncotic pressure decreases and fluid moves into the tissues.  Edema can be found around the eyes and in the legs in patients with nephrotic syndrome.
