Oval fat bodies have a characteristic maltese cross (see picture) appearance
under plane polarized microscopy. Formed elements that can be seen under
polarized microscopy are called birefringent. Oval fat bodies are pathological
and are indicative of nephrotic syndrome. Ammonium biurate does not
have a characteristic feature in plane polarized microscopy, and it is not
pathological.
