Ketones along with glucose are indicative of uncontrolled diabetest mellitus.  Due to the lack of insulin, cells are unable to uptake and use glucose for energy; therefore, fatty acid catabolism is used as a source of energy.  Ketone bodies are products of this fatty acid metabolism.  Thus both glucose and ketones are elevated in blood.
