Annette Giesecke Professor of Ancient Greek and Roman Studies
Annette Giesecke received her B.A. in Classics from UCLA and her M.A. and Ph.D., both in Classics, from Harvard University, where her areas of specialization became Greek and Roman painting, Greek tragedy, and Latin epic poetry. While in graduate school, Professor Giesecke was awarded a curatorial internship at the Getty Villa, Malibu, in the Department of Antiquities, and after completing her dissertation, she taught Greek and Roman art and architecture as well as advanced Greek and Latin in the Department of Classics at Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand. Prior to her appointment at the University of Delaware in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, she also taught at UCLA and Loyola Marymount University.
At the University of Delaware, Professor Giesecke teaches ancient Greek and Latin at all levels as well as a variety of large courses "in translation" (Society and Spectacle in Ancient Greece and Rome; Greek Tragedy; Gods, Heroes, and Monsters: Classical Mythology in Epic; Art and Archaeology of Ancient Greece – UD Athens program). She was awarded the 2007 College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Teaching Award.

Professor Giesecke has published on the following topics: Greek and Roman domestic architecture; Greek and Roman painting (vase-painting and free-painting); the relation between texts and images; urbanism in Classical antiquity; Greek and Roman gardens; expressions of utopianism in Greek and Roman art, architecture, and literature; Greek epic poetry; and Latin epic poetry.
