Promoting
Higher-Level Thinking and Inquiry When Teaching Sensitive and Controversial
Subjects
Sensitive and
controversial topics in higher education typically yield a strong
affective response from students. This emotional reaction can promote
increased investment in the topic along with furthering higher-level
thinking in students. However, students can also get stuck in an
emotional position without analyzing options and consequences. This
interactive session will provide some recent research-based findings
on affective learning and an overview of higher-level thinking and
inquiry processes. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss
how educators can set the stage and create the optimal learning
environment to support the connection between affective learning
and higher-level thinking. Participants will then integrate the
previous discussions into practical teaching strategies that educators
can apply to a variety of sensitive topics in different disciplines. |
