Field Exercise #7

Measuring Precipitation in the Newark Area

(The Final Chapter)

Introduction:

I have now received everyone’s (almost) precipitation data and their station location information.  We will use this data to analyze two major precipitation events that occurred in the New Castle County area during our observation period.  During the next class meeting time (Monday 11/13) you will be receiving a packet of information with maps of our precipitation sites (New Castle County and the Newark area), a listing of our precipitation sites, and a precipitation data table.  Please note that the listing of precipitation sites and the data table are given at the end of this page.

The Field Exercise Report:

To complete the precipitation field exercise report you must complete the following tasks:

Map the total precipitation during our observing period.

1) Calculate the total precipitation at each of our observation sites for the period 9/19 through 10/8 .

2) Plot this data on the New Castle County map.  If possible, contour the plotted precipitation data.  Please note that the site labeled N should be an average for all the sites in the Newark Area (sites 5 through 9).

3) Plot this data on the Newark area map.  If possible, contour the plotted precipitation data.

Map the precipitation that fell on September 19th

1) Plot the data on the New Castle County map.  If possible, contour the plotted precipitation data.  Please note that the site labeled N should be an average for all the sites in the Newark Area (sites 5 through 9).

2) Plot the data on the Newark area map.  If possible, contour the plotted precipitation data.

Map the precipitation that fell during the period September 25th through September 26th

1) Calculate the total precipitation that fell at each site during this two-day period.

Use these maps to explain the precipitation distribution across the area.  Please comment on the similarities or differences between precipitation events across the region.  Do any observation sites “stand out” as being unusual?  What are some errors that could cause a given site to be unrepresentative of the surrounding area?
