Introduction to Judaism will familiarize students with the basic religious practices, concepts and ethics of the Jewish religious tradition. We will read from primary documents and secondary sources to understand both the rich variety of Judaism and the common themes that run through its past and present. The class will emphasize the diversity of religious expression throughout Jewish history. No previous knowledge of Judaism is assumed.

History of Jews and Judaism covers the breadth of Jewish history from the Hebrew Bible to the present day. We will look at the events and ideas that shaped Jewish life in four major eras, biblical, rabbinic, medieval and modern. The class will also explore the historical and intellectual interactions of Jews and non-Jews. No previous knowledge of Jewish history is assumed.
