INDEPENDENT STUDY

(COM 366, COM 466, COM 666).

Instructions: All students, undergraduate and graduate, who wish to pursue an independent study project should write a proposal showing the plan for their intended study, giving purpose, expected results, sources available, and value of the study to the student. (See page 2)

The proposal is to be returned to the departmental office two weeks before the end of the regular registration period, and prior to registering for Independent Study. The chairperson will discuss the proposed project with appropriate faculty members and the student will be notified if the project has been approved. Registration by the student may then take place.

Students may designate a preferred faculty director for Independent Study. The proposed project must be discussed with the faculty member in some detail prior to submitting this form. [The decision to assume the role of director of an Independent Study is voluntary and completely at the discretion of the faculty member.

The following information should be noted relative to Independent Study registration:

  • 1. Permission to register for Independent Study will be limited to junior and senior majors in Communication with a 2.75 g.p.a. cumulative index and 3.0 or better major index (COM courses), and to graduate students.

    2. Study projects are to be completed within one semester. Grades of I (Incomplete) are awarded only in cases of emergency, where conditions beyond the control of the student prevent completion of the work on time.

    3. Regular conferences, beginning with the first week of a term, are expected to be held between the student and his/her advisor.

    4. Approved study projects may not be changed without written approval of the faculty advisor and the chairperson.

    5. The materials by which the study project will be evaluated must be submitted to the faculty advisor prior to the beginning of the final examination period. These materials, or another copy provided by the student, will remain in the departmental file.

    6. At the option of the faculty advisor, a written final examination may be requested in addition to the evaluation materials covering the study project.

    7. Three credit hours for Independent Study is a maximum in any semester.

    8. A maximum of six credit hours may be counted toward the major in an undergraduate or a graduate program. The following is to be provided in a double-spaced typewritten format. Do not attemptto register for an Independent Study course until your faculty advisor and the department chairperson have approved your proposal.

  • 1. Working Title of Proposed Study: (This should be placed at the beginning of your proposal.)

    2. Statement of proposed plan of study: (This section is to be between two and three pages and should provide the reader with the specifics of your proposed study, including the materials and method by which the project will be evaluated by the sponsoring faculty member.)

    3. Requirements of sponsor to complete proposed course: (You should meet with your faculty sponsor and outline the specific requirements of the course. The requirements are to be summarized within one page.)
