Erase file(s): Macintosh Secure Empty Trash

1. To use Secure Empty Trash, first open the finder window:
   

2. In the toolbar at the top of your screen, click the word Finder.
   
3. Select Preferences from the drop-down list.
   
4. Click Advanced in the Finder Preferences window.
   
5. Select the Empty Trash securely check box.
   
6. Optional: Select the Show warning before emptying the Trash check box.
   
7. Close Finder Preferences.
   
8. On the Macintosh dock, right-click the Trash icon.
   
9. Select Empty Trash from the drop-down list.
   
10. If you completed step 6, a message similar to the one below should appear:
    
    
    NOTE

    If you did not complete step 6, your trash will securely empty without prompting you.

11. Click Secure Empty Trash.
