Google Groups: Converting an existing mailing list to Google Groups

If you currently have a Mailmain or manually maintained mail list (MMML), contact the IT Support Center to request that your existing mailing list be converted to a UD Google Group. Unless you have a large Mailman list, you must copy your member list before you contact the IT Support Center. After your Google Group is created, you will need to import your membership list.

Converting a Mailman mailing list to a Google Group

Before requesting your list be converted, you'll need a copy of your list members' addresses.
  • If your Mailman list has more than 50 members, let the IT Support Center know and we can request that the list be exported to a file.
  • If you have a small list (fewer than 50 members) you should follow these instructions to copy your member list before requesting the conversion:
    1. Log in to the list admin page for your list.
    2. Scroll down to the bottom of the admin page and select the first link in the page footer. It's the link labeled
      list-name run by listowner at udel.edu.
    3. On the list information page, scroll down to the subscribers section. Click View Subscriber List.
    4. The list of subscribers displays as a Web page, probably a single one.
    5. Copy the subscribers' addresses and paste them into a Word or Notepad document.
    6. Clean up the addresses as needed (e.g., remove leading *, replace at with @ if your list obfuscates addresses). When you are done, you'll have a list of email addresses, one per line.
    7. Save the document.

  • You are now ready to submit your conversion request to the IT Support Center. If you have a big list, include the request that a copy of the member list be sent to you.
  • After your Group is created, import your membership list.

Conversion note: Archives from a Mailman mailing list cannot be moved to UD Google Groups; however, you can request that the archived messages be saved.

Converting a manually maintained mailing list to a Google Group

Before requesting your list be converted, you'll need a copy of your list members' addresses.
  1. Log in to the MMML manager.
  2. Using the magnifying glass icon, view your list's member list.

  3. Copy the member list.
  4. Paste the list into Word or Notepad and save the document.
  5. You are now ready to submit your conversion request to the IT Support Center.
  6. After your Group is created, import your membership list.

Importing a member list into a Google Group

  1. After your new Google Group has been created, log in to your Google Apps at UD account (googleapps.udel.edu).
  2. Select Groups from the square Google Apps grid next to your name at the top right of the window.
  3. Select your Google Group.
  4. Select Add Members Directly.
  5. Copy your member list then paste it in the textbox labeled Enter email addresses to add as members.
  6. Write a message in the Write a welcome message textbox.
  7. Click Add.
