Samba File Services

What the service is

UD Samba File Service is a subscription-based, native UNIX storage solution offered by UD IT for University departments to locally manage University information.

The charge for the service is $1.00 per GB per year. Billing occurs on an annual basis with pro-rated credits applied for early termination.

Samba shares can be specified with a minimum share size of 50GB and a maximum of 2TB. UD Samba is suitable for storing most types of University information.

However, because the information is not administered by UD IT, per University policy, it is not appropriate for storing confidential, high-risk Personally Identifiable Information (PII). All information stored on UD Samba file services are subject to University information classification and protection requirements.

Quick facts

  • Cost: $1.00 per GB per year.
  • Uses LDAP Authentication (UDelNet)
  • 50GB minimum, 2TB maximum single file shares (multiple shares are allowed).
  • 90 days of backups (no archives).

Requesting a share

To request the service, send email to the IT Support Center (consult@udel.edu) with the amount of space requested, a share name (often the name of the unit requesting the share), account code and approver information, and a list of the UDelNet IDs of the users who should be granted read/write or read-only access.

Accessing Samba

On Windows:

Use File Explorer to access your share and map a drive. The location is \\samba.nss.udel.edu\{sharename}. For example, if the share is named CSS, then the address is \\samba.nss.udel.edu\CSS

On Macintosh

In Finder, select the Go menu, then Connect to Server, then specify smb://samba.nss.udel.edu/{sharename}. For example if the share is named CSS, then the address is smb://samba.nss.udel.edu/CSS
