Configuring Outlook Express for Multiple Identities

If you need to share your computer with someone else or if you need to use your computer to check e-mail for two different accounts (e.g., checking your UD e-mail and checking your e-mail at an off-campus ISP), you will find it easier to set up Outlook Express to use multiple identities.

Creating a new identity

  1. Open Outlook Express as you ordinarily would.
  2. From the File menu, select Switch Identity.
  3. In the Switch Identities window, click Manage Identities. By default, if you have been using Outlook Express with only one identity, you will see an identity named Main Identity listed here. If you have not already changed this to something more meaningful, follow these steps:
    1. In the Manage Identities window, highlight Main Identity and click Properties.
    2. In the Identity Properties window, type the name, then click OK.
  4. To create a new identity, in the Manage Identities window, click New. Type a meaningful name in the New Identity window. For example, if two roommates are sharing one computer for e-mail, type the other roommate's name. Or if you are creating an identity to make it easier to use an off-campus ISP at home, use a name like "Bob At Home."
  5. Click OK.
  6. In the Identity Added window, click Yes to switch to your new identity. Follow the directions in the Configuring the Outlook Express E-mail Program document or the directions provided by your ISP for configuring your new identity.

Switching Identities

  2. In the Switch Identities window, click Manage Identities.
  3. In the Manage Identities window, highlight the identity you would like to delete. Click Remove.
  4. In the Warning window, confirm that you wish to delete the identity by clicking Delete.
  5. In the Manage Identities window, click Close.
  6. In the Switch Identities window, click OK.
