How to configure Outlook Express e-mail
You must enter specific information in the "account" settings of the Outlook Express application for it to work properly with UD's central e-mail server (i.e., mail.udel.edu). These instructions explain how to configure the application properly.- Double-click the Outlook Express desktop icon, which looks similar to
the following:
You should see the main Outlook Express window, which looks similar to the following:
- From the Tools menu, click Accounts.
- In the Internet Accounts dialog box, click the Mail tab.
- On
the right-hand side of the dialog box, click Add and
then click Mail.
You should see the Your Name dialog box, which looks similar
to
the
following:
- In the Display name field, type your name as you would like it to appear in outgoing e-mail messages.
- Click Next.
You should see the Internet E-mail Address dialog box,
which looks similar to the following:
- In the E-mail address field, type your complete e-mail address (e.g., trueblue@udel.edu).
- Click Next. You should see the E-mail Server Names dialog
box, which looks similar to the following:
- Use the downward-pointing arrow on the drop-down box after My incoming mail server is a to select IMAP.
- In the Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server field,
type
mail.udel.edu
- In the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server field,
type
mail.udel.edu
After you make these changes, the dialog box should look similar to the following:

- Click Next. You should see the Internet Mail Logon dialog
box, which looks similar to the following:
- The Account
name field should already contain your username (in this example,
"Trainf"). Type your password in the Password field.
Your password will appear as asterisks on the screen.
NOTE
Uncheck the Remember password check box. If you do not uncheck this box, others may be able to access your account. - Click Next. You should see the Congratulations dialog
box, which looks similar to the following:
- Click Finish. If you see a dialog box asking if you would like to view a list of available folders, click No.
How to set up additional properties for your account
- You will need to change a few more properties for your account. In the Internet
Accounts dialog box, highlight the e-mail account name; if you have not made any prior changes it should read mail.udel.edu.

- On the right-hand side of the screen, click Properties.
- If you see the following Outlook Express dialog box, click No.
If you need to share your computer with someone else, or if you use a commercial ISP, consult the directions for configuring Outlook Express for multiple identities.
- In the Properties dialog box, click the General tab (if necessary). At the bottom of the dialog box, uncheck the box in front of Include this account when receiving mail or synchronizing.
- Click Apply.
- Click the Servers tab.
- Under Outgoing Mail Server check the box in front of My server requires authentication. Your dialog box should look similar to the following:
- Click the Settings button and click the radio button in front of Use the same settings as my incoming mail server. Click OK.
Your dialog box should look similar to the following:
- You will be back at the Servers tab. Click Apply.
- Click the Advanced tab.
- Under Outgoing mail (SMTP), check the box in front of This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
- Under Incoming mail (IMAP), check the box in front of This server requires a secure connection (SSL). (The number in the box above this line will change to 993).
- Under Server Timeouts, move the slider to the right until the timeout is set to 2 minutes.
- Click Apply.
After you make these changes, your dialog box should look similar to the following:
If you have difficulties sending mail from the outgoing mail server port 25, you can change the port to 587. Highlight the text in the Outgoing mail (SMTP) field and type 587 to change the port from 25 to 587.
- Click the IMAP tab.
- Uncheck the box in front of Check for new messages in all folders.
- Check the box in front of Store special folders on
IMAP server.
- In the Sent Items path field, type:
Sent
- In the Drafts path field, type:
Draft
After you make these changes, your dialog box should look similar to the following:
- In the Sent Items path field, type:
- Click OK.
- Close the Internet Accounts dialog box.
- If you see a message about downloading messages from the mail server or refreshing your list of messages, click Yes.
- If you see a Logon - mail.udel.edu dialog box that requests your password, type your password and click OK.
- If all of your mail folders do not download, click Reset List.
- Highlight your account name in the Folders list—the left-most column in the dialog box. (By default Outlook Express displays your account name as mail.udel.edu.)
- From the Tools menu, click Options.

- In the Options dialog box, click the General tab.
- Check the box in front of When starting, go directly to my 'Inbox' folder.
- Uncheck the box in front of Automatically log on to Windows Messenger.
- Uncheck the box in front of Send and receive messages at startup.
- In the pull-down box to the right of Check for new messages every
30 minutes, click the down-arrow to change the number to 15 minutes.
After you make these changes, your dialog box should look similar to the following:

- Click the Maintenance tab.
To remove deleted messages from your account automatically, check the
boxes in front of Empty messages from the 'Deleted Items' folder on exit and Purge deleted
messages when leaving IMAP folders.
After you make these changes, your dialog box should look similar to the following:
- Click the Security tab. To be able to download
e-mail attachments, uncheck the box in front of Do not allow attachments
to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus.
After you make these changes, your dialog box should look similar to
the following:

- Click the Send tab. If you wish to save copies of
your outgoing e-mail, check the box in
front of Save copy of sent messages in the
'Sent Items' folder on your computer's disk drive.
As the Mail Sending Format, make sure that Plain Text is selected.
After you make these changes, your dialog box should look similar to the following:

- Click OK.
- If you see the following Outlook
Express dialog box, click Yes to
download the folders in your e-mail account.
- If you see a Logon - mail.udel.edu dialog box that requests your password, type your password, and then click OK.
- If you see the Show/Hide IMAP Folders dialog box, click OK. You should automatically return to the main Outlook Express screen.
- To see the size of your incoming messages, which is useful
for managing your e-mail
folders and disk quota use, follow these steps:
- Click on your Inbox.
- From the View menu, click Columns.
- Using the downward pointing arrow, scroll down the list of columns until you see Size.
- Make sure that the box next to Size contains a checkmark. If it does not, click the box in front of Size.
- Click OK.
How to configure the LDAP Directory Server
Configuring Outlook Express to use the University's LDAP Directory Server makes it easier for you to send e-mail to individuals at UD.
- From the Tools menu,
click Accounts.
You should see the Internet Accounts dialog box, which
looks similar to the following:

- On the right-hand side of the dialog box, click Add.
- Click Directory Service.
You should see the Internet Directory Server Name dialog box, which looks similar to the following:

- In the Internet
directory (LDAP) server field, type
ldap.udel.edu
After you make these changes, your dialog box should look similar to the following:
- Click Next.
You should see the Check E-mail Addresses dialog box, which looks similar
to the following:

- Click the radio button in front of Yes.
- Click Next.
- Click Finish.
- Click the ldap.udel.edu directory service in the Internet Accounts dialog box.
- On the right-hand side of the dialog box, click Properties.
- Highlight the text in the Directory Service Account field
and type
UD LDAP Service
- Click the Advanced tab.
You should see a dialog box, which looks similar to the following:

- In the Search base field, type
ou=People,o=udel.edu
After you make this change, your dialog box should look similar to the following:

- Click OK.
- Close the dialog box.
