Copy folders from UD Webmail to GoogleApps at UD using an existing account
| Warning: Do not attempt to copy your UD Webmail Inbox into your GoogleAppsat UD account until after you have switched to GoogleAppsat UD. |
To copy folders from your existing UD Webmail account into GoogleApps at UD mail, you must have a separate email client program (Thunderbird, MacMail) on your Windows or Macintosh computer. You cannot copy folders if you only use UD Webmail.
You first need to enable IMAP in Google Mail by doing the following:
- Sign in to Gmail through googleapps.udel.edu.
- Click the gear icon
at the top of the Gmail page. - Select Gmail settings.
- Click Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
- Select Enable IMAP.
- Save your changes
If you do not have an email client (Thunderbird, MacMail) currently configured to access UD email:
Follow the instructions to copy folders from UD Webmail to Google Apps at UD using Thunderbird 3.
If you do have an email client (Thunderbird, MacMail) currently configured to access UD email, complete the steps below:

Obtain your Google password:
- Log in to the UD Network page.
- Select Obtain or change your password for IMAP or iCal access to Google Apps at UD.
- View or change your Google Apps password.

Add the GoogleApps account to your current UD mail setup:
Thunderbird users:
- From the Help menu, select About Mozilla Thunderbird to determine your program version.
- Thunderbird 3 Users:
Complete Steps 3-4 in the Thunderbird 3 directions to create the Google Apps at UD account and copy your folders. - Thunderbird 2 users:
- From the Tools menu, select Account Settings.
- Click Add Account (at the bottom of the left column).
- Use the settings in the table below to complete the setup of the GoogleApps at UD account.
Configure the GoogleApps account using Thunderbird:
Setting Specification Account Type: Mail Protocol: IMAP User Name: UDelNet ID@udel.edu Email Address: UDelNet ID@udel.edu Incoming Mail Server: imap.gmail.com Use Secure Connection (SSL): Checked or Yes selected.
Secure Connection (SSL)
The port number should be 993The use secure authentication box should be blank (unchecked).
Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.gmail.com Use Authentication for Outgoing Mail Server: Checked or Yes selected.
Enter your UDelNet ID@udel.edu and Google Apps Password for authentication.Port Port should be 587.
Note: If you have difficulty sending mail using port 587, use port 465 instead.Email Password: Your Google Apps password Connection security STARTTLS
- From the File menu, select Add Account.
- Use the settings in the tables below to complete the setup of the GoogleApps at UD account.
Configure the GoogleApps account using Mac Mail:

Copy folders from your UD Webmail to Google Apps at UD email:
You should now have two Inboxes and the folders that currently exist in both your UD Webmail and Google Apps at UD accounts.
- Drag messages or a folder from the UD Webmail section to the GoogleApps at UD section and copying will begin. This is usually a behind-the-scenes task that may take some time.

Check progress by clicking on the folder you dragged to the GoogleApps at UD account and seeing how much mail has been moved.

When the copying is complete, delete the UD Webmail account (mail.udel.edu):
Thunderbird users
- From the Tools menu, select Account Settings.
- Select the name of the account.
- Click Remove Account.
Mac Mail users
- From the Mail menu, select Preferences.
- Click the UD Webmail account in the Accounts column at the left .
- Click the - (minus) icon at the bottom of the column.
