I dozed off during your talk. Now that I'm
awake, what's really important for my student and
me to remember?
- Web sites for IT issues:
- The University treats violations of its computing policies
very seriously: fines and sanctions can result. It is important
for students to follow the directions at
http://www.udel.edu/security and to download music and other media legally from the
resources listed at http://www.udel.edu/legaltunes.
- Wireless!! http://www.udel.edu/wireless
- Students should get their ID cards and a PIN today; tomorrow, they
should go to http://www.udel.edu/welcome and follow the
directions to start the process of getting their UDelNet IDs and
passwords--used for UDSIS, e-mail, access to UD databases,
discounts on software, etc.

Should a student bring a laptop computer to campus?
- About
65% of our students bring a laptop.
- What will rule your decision: Convenience or Cost?
- Portable computing = more network access:
The University has
installed
802.11b/g compatible wireless access points in over 100 buildings: classroom buildings, the library, student
centers, and residence
halls. UD views wireless access as an important supplement to
Ethernet access.

Do a lot of laptops get stolen on campus?
- The Office of Public Safety tells us that so long as students exercise
common sense, laptops do not get stolen very often.

- Don't leave the computer unattended in a public area.
- Locking cable sets are available from most computer
vendors.
- The computer's Ethernet or wireless card's serial number
assists with tracking.
- The computer's serial number can be
registered with Public Safety.
For more information, contact Public Safety

Do students really lose their network access
for copyright violations or connecting an infected computer to
UDelNet?
- YES!
- Once an infected computer is clean, it may be reconnected.
- Copyright violations are treated seriously: 30 days
suspension of UDelNet privileges and a referral
to the student judicial system.
- If IT staff have to clean a student's system or if a
student's computer has been used to violate the copyright laws,
that student will be charged a computer clean-up fee of at least
$70.00.

When can a student begin using UD's network?
- As soon as he or she pass UCCE and ECCE to complete the
activation of their UDelNet ID.
- Begin at http://www.udel.edu/welcome or go directly to http://www.udel.edu/network
- Because e-mail is
one of the official ways the University communicates with its
students, students should complete the process of activating
their UDelNet IDs before
arriving on campus.
- Do as much as you can from the "Protect and Clean" section
of http://www.udel.edu/security before you come to campus. If your computer is not protected properly
against viruses, worms, and other "exploits," it will not be
allowed on UDelNet.
