Mastering the Freshman Year |
A team of 4 faculty members, led by Dr. Barber, have
created a Mastering the Freshman
Year site. The site helps Ag freshmen locate resources in the areas of
academics, health and safety, personal finance, career planning, social
events, cultural events, and learning styles.

The Shadows of Light,
an interactive e-lab, makes use of problem-based learning, framing the
concepts in authentic experience -- in this case, a criminal
investigation. Replete with resources, pop-up video, engaging content and
a crime scene drama, the students are able to systematically explore
concepts. Students visit an online "Pre-Lab" and "Post-Lab" before and
after the lab, extending the in-class concepts. More...

To create more time for development of non-profit sector
food and nutrition business plans, the lecture component of the course has
been moved out of the class and is delivered by CD-ROM. Dr. Lieux has
created narrated PowerPoint presentations which students view at their own
pace. One class per week has been canceled to accomodate the out of class
responsibility. The knowledge gained from each lecture is measured by a
weekly quiz and incorporated into the business plan.

Charlene Hamilton |
Dietetic Internship
|
Recognizing that students sometimes struggle when they
make the transition from classroom practice to the workplace, Ann Rucinski
and Charlene Hamilton, Nutrition and Dietetics, decided to incorporate a
"live" client into the school’s internship. They worked with the staff of
the PRESENT to implement their plan using WebCT—UD’s online course
management system—for upcoming offerings of the Dietetic Internship. More... |

Janet Hethorn |
CNST 110
Seeing and Being in a Visual World |
Janet Hethorn, Consumer Studies, wanted her students to
create online visual books in her course, Seeing and Being in a Visual
World. Previously her students handed in printed books that she alone
reviewed. Now she uses WebCT's student presentation tool to allow students
to post web pages that analyze the visual elements of photographs. Using
this tool, Hethorn's students are able to collaborate and share their work
their work with the whole class. |

POSC211
Introduction to Politics in Developing Countries |
Pique
Publishing, Deiner's online classroom company, immerses students in a
process-oriented learning environment. Students play the roles of editors,
columnists, and media specialists to collaboratively produce online
newsletters using WebCT's student presentations area. Since most students
commute to class and work full-time jobs, Pique Publishing allows product
development to occur at any location connected to the internet while
creating meaningful engagement with the course's fundamental.

Chandra Reedy |
ARTH205
The Science and Detection of Art Forgeries |
This online teaching and learning environment provides an
in-depth multimedia investigation of three high-profile art forgeries.
Reedy offers access to expert insights, video clips, methodologies and
images, and uses WebCT's selective content release features to require
students to demonstrate competency at strategic points before continuing.
Multimedia content is delivered on-demand, extending student engagement to
the content beyond the class meeting time. |

Dr. Klinzing has used a campus computer site for
administering essay exams. She found that student essays were of better
quality, had improved organization, were greater in volume and detail, and
were easier to read. Administrative details were worked out with the
students prior to the exam. Her course Web page is based on one of the
PRESENT syllabus
templates. | |

Don Lehman |
Don Lehman scanned 35mm slides to create an online
gallery of intestinal parasites. He found that, "The feedback from
students has been very positive. They find the images very helpful for
studying. One student this semester told me he would rather look at the
images on the Web page than spend the time looking for the parasites on
microscope slides. This is fine for lab practicals, but in the clinical
laboratory he will need experience viewing physical slides. I do not want
my students to become dependent on the Web site."

This three-semester course offers students a unique
opportunity to actively participate in the presidential election process.
A student technology assistant created a customized guestbook interface
(currently delivered through WebCT) that allowed students to contribute
and manipulate a dynamic library of election media. The Spring 2000
students staged a "Super Tuesday" primary night pressroom. Summer 2000
students went behind the
scenes at the GOP convention as part of their class work. More... |

“I can teach in much greater depth, even to non-majors.
Student response has been overwhelmingly positive, too." Larry Peterson
states, "the visual component helps the students ‘see’ the concepts and
increases their interest. And, that increased interest further enhances
students’ ability to understand the material.” More...

These web sites make extensive use of Adobe Acrobat PDF
files. This format is extremely useful for presenting material with
special characters, such as mathematical formulas. Acrobat Reader, an application
for reading and printing Adobe Acrobat PDF files is freely

BISC 208
Introductory Biology II (Honors) |
A wide variety of tools were used to create an engaging
and interactive course Web site, including: interactive chat room where
students can exchange ideas or collaborate on their team projects,
anonymous suggestion box, gallery of digital camera photographs from lab
sessions, and online forms for periodic surveys and evaluations. Under
development is an online version of the laboratory manual for the course,
including digital video clips for laboratory preparation
exercises. | |

Nicole Vadino says, “the technology just helps a teacher have more tools
to match the different learning styles of her students.” More... |

Foreign Language Media Center

Before creating an online reading assistant, faculty said
a lot of in-class time was spent making sure students master the mechanics
of each reading assignment. “With the reading assistant, the students can
work on the mechanics at home, so we can discuss the stories and issues
they raise in class,” said Katrien Christie from Foreign Languages. More...

A student technology assistant created an online image
gallery (currently disabled) which could be administered through a web
interface. Each image has comments included by the instructor to emphasize
notable impressions of the works. |
