Problem-Based Learning: From Ideas to Solutions through Communication
January 17-19, 2007
9:00am - 4:30pm; Refreshments and sign-in at 8:30am
Registration Form
The basic principle supporting the concept of problem-based instruction is that learning is initiated by a posed problem, query, or puzzle that the learner wants to solve. In the problem-based approach, complex, real world problems or cases are used to motivate students to identify and research concepts and principles they need to know in order to progress through the problems. Students work in small learning teams, bringing together collective skill at acquiring, communicating, and integrating information in a process that resembles that of inquiry.
This three-day workshop will demonstrate problem-based learning (PBL) and model ways that PBL can be used effectively in all disciplines, in upper and lower division courses, and in all size classes. One focus of this program will be writing effective problem-based materials; participants will leave the session with new or revised problems for use in their couses. Another focus will be engaging students in research and communication as part of the process of PBL.
This workshop is sponsored by the Institute for Transforming Undergraduate Education and is open to all members of the UD faculty. Graduate students are also welcome to participate; preference will be given to students mentored by faculty members who are ITUE Fellows or are attending this session.
Faculty members from other colleges and universities are invited to attend this workshop. Visiting faculty teams are limited to five from each institution. Registration cost is $595/ person which includes instruction, materials, and refreshment breaks; a discount is extended for early registration and payment. . Participants are responsible for their own transportation, meals, and accommodations; you may refer to an online Visitor's Guide for information. Block reservations are available at two local hotels.
